Artwork for Conntext beer

Conntext

Conntext is a  to Smokedown Farm and Pioneer Hops; the first commercial hop growers in our state’s modern history. Appropriate for quenching one’s thirst after a day among the bines, and clean enough to let the character of how our environments and small scale processes impart unique characteristics through the same genetic root stock of commercially available hop varieties.

Two major challenges of small scale hop farming are cost/price and consumer expectation. Commercially available hops are blends of thousands of acres of the same (occasionally multiple) varieties matched in a way to produce the same flavor year after year. Growing hops in  a 10 acre yard across the country will surely produce variations in flavor and aroma, which can often confuse consumers expecting a classic “Cascade” or “Chinook” hop character. As such, our local hop farmers have come together to rename these varieties “Conncade” and “Connook” for the State in which they are grown. This beer is a celebration of variation and and effort to identify the unique impact of our environment on hop character and working toward a language to convey that message.
